Chinese Maritime Customs Service (6 galleries)

Of all the entities appearing in this collection, images relating to the Chinese Maritime Customs Service ("CMCS") have been the easiest to compile. Although largely managed by Westerners from 1858 (or July 1854 for Shanghai) until January 1950, the CMCS was, and of course still is, a Chinese institution. Consequently there are a significant number of older CMCS buildings that remain today. One or two of these date back to the late 19th Century and many are still in use.
